hey, i'm currently deciding where and when to go to places, at the minute i'm hoping to be in LA around september-october of this year, anybody else planning on being there then? or has anybody been before with any advice of where to go and what to do whilst you're there?
There's studio tours, theme parks, shopping, beaches, and so on. You could take a flight to Vegas if you have too much money and want to get rid of some.
You will need a car. Traffic in rush hours is a nightmare in California. Best avoided. Do have some good road maps.
Accommodation even in motels is expensive these days, and cheaper booked online beforehand.
How long are you going for ?
I spent a week in Vegas, a week in San Fran and went on and spent two weeks in LA last year and in my opinion it can get a little boring. But it really depends what kind of holiday it is, mine was more for site seeing!
Once you do the usual site seeing stuff, universal studios, tours, you could also see if there is any shows/events on in the staple center/Nokia theater but there's not much else to do other then chill by the beach which isn't bad either :P
if you want decent food and drink in the nice areas its expensive enough.
It's a lovely place and I'd defiantly go back again, I went over on a budget so our accommodation wasn't great if I where going again I'd stay in a better hotel nearer to a beach preferably Santa Monica or Malibu (lovely beachs and area)
Universal studios was prob the best part of my trip there - give yourself a full day to spend there , so much to do and see.
Hey .. here are my 2 cents of info on LA.
I have been there for a couple of days and this is what you can try out.
You can rent a home/ apt for a few days at a prime location like Beverly Hills / West Hollywood etc ... Here's where ppl post the .. airbnb.com
If in Beverly Hills there are a couple a good cafe's (e.g. Urth) n restaurants on that Bevery Dr I guess. .. Nearby is Rodeo Dr where you can window shop all the expensive brands etc..
Santa Monica Beach is a great place to hangout... do rent a cycle if you fancy. You might consider driving on the pacific highway . which is a a road that runs alongside the seashore...
Universal Studios is a must but thats gonna take a full day so choose your rides carefully :-p.. Transformers ride is great !!
If you like to party then there is plenty of option in West Hollywood arnd Hollywood blvd... a... n do checkout the Hollywood walk of fame ( although I didn't find it to be that interesting anyways :-p)
The weather can be quite hot during that period. Do plan on some beach time and enjoy the ocean.
Besides the obvious (Disneyland, Universal Studios, the beach), I'd like to also suggest visits to the Huntington Library and Gardens.
It is actually a mansion from the 1800s owned by the former owner of the Southern Pacific Railroad. He built himself a library with rare collection (one of the three Guggenheim Bibles in existence, writings from Leonardo di Vinci), has beautiful paintings inside that would normally hang in a major art gallery including two copies (of the 130 in existence) done by Gilbert Stuart, who did the original painting of George Washington that is on the US $1 bill (The first original painting hangs in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC)
Huntington then surrounded his mansion and library with 13 different types of gardens that cover an area about 1/2 the size of London's Hyde Park. There is an Australian Garden, Children's Garden, Chinese Garden, Rose Garden, Jungle Garden, Herb Garden, Desert Garden, Japanese Garden, Sub-Tropical Garden, Camilla Garden, Shakespeare Garden, Palm Garden, and Lily Ponds. There is also a Conservatory.

As far as beaches, I'd choose either the far western beaches (Zuma, Malibu, or Santa Monica) or my own favorites--one of the best southern beaches--Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, or Laguna Beach. Manhattan Beach is also good.
Lastly, if it is not too, too hot--take a trip out to the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area for lying out at a beautiful resort pool. It's a gorgeous weekend getaway area for the Los Angelenos. You can also cool off (if needed) by taking the tram to the top of the mountain there (it is always at least 30 degrees Fareinheit (15 degree Celsius) difference between the top and bottom of the mountain).
