U.S first time traveller, tips and advice! Jan 2014.

Hi guys,
My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to the U.S in January 2014 and we'd love some tips, ideas or suggestions on where to go, where to stay, where to avoid and what to do! I'm a first time traveller although he's not. I would love some feedback if possible from travellers or locals!
Here are the basics:

January is one of the worst times to start a US trip - rain, wind, snow - pretty miserable at that time. You will find many places normally open in better weather to be closed then. If you are planning on driving from Northern California to N. Nevada-Colorado, your car must carry chains for snow. Many amusement parks are closed at that time of year. Jan is good for shopping since there are many sales then.

Think April, October, etc.

Hi,

That's a lot of money for just 3 weeks and I personally think that if you just go for 3 weeks you can get by for a lot less for two people and like Daawgon mentions: not the best time for a lot of places, unless you want snowy and cold conditions in large parts of course.

But still it is possible, I would just stick to a certain area and if LAX is the best place to fly into stick to Southern California, maybe up north towards San Francisco along the coast. Then drive south of the Sierra Nevada towards Death Valley and Las Vegas and to the Grand Canyon, you might check if the parks in southern Utah are ok at the time (not too much snow and ice etc) or otherwise venture south into Arizona and visit the desert over there.

Another option is to capture the southeast and stick to a few parts of Texas and then the southern states towards Florida for a sunny end.

But if you are from Australia: better visit in summer... Their summer I mean.

Cheers
Michael.
PS: what is Columbia?

Michael, I would guess

Thanks Mike.
It occured to me later that maybe DC could be it too...district of Columbia. Much more interesting too...

It could also be the Columbia River Gorge on the border between the states of Oregon and Washington:

Congratulations! Well I have never been to Australia but I have heard nothing but good things about the outback. I have traveled across the country many times and there are so many places to go and so many different things to do. However the first thing that you need to do is get you some travel insurance! I went to Bogota, Columbia to spend time there with my fiancee, and while there I fell off of a horse and had some pretty minor but major to me injuries. I had to pay $1500 out of pocket in order to be released from the hospital. So please I beg of you to please consider purchasing travel insurance and trip cancelation insurance -snip-.

As far as place to visit...Are you coming as a tourist or to visit specific places for historical purposes? We have many different landmarks that are spread out from the west to the east coast of the country. 3 weeks can fly by so it is a good deal to narrow down the place you will want to spend the bulk of your time. Do you like being near water? Come to Florida. Do you want to ski and experience the snow? Go to Vermont. The truth is any location that you pick will be ideal, but it's really up to your preferences. Visit the official state website for each location you mentioned. That will be a bit of help in itself. Safe Travels

Some things I'd recommend
- In chicago go watch a cubs game, very different from cricket
- See Austin Texas if you get the chance, a great city and texans are awesome (see the spasmatics while you are there, they are an 80's one hit wonder cover band that dress as nerds)

definitely do the south if you are heading in january. its just not worth it anywhere else lol--midwest is the worst place to visit in winter so i would probably avoid chicago. austin, texas is a must. new orleans obvi, miami. if you are looking for amusement parks hit up orlando and go to disneyworld
