I generally say an average of AUD $75/day for staying in dorm rooms in decent quality hostels, buying supermarket food to cook your own meals, and travelling on once a week by public transport.
I figure since you'll only be there for a month, you'll want to see more than 4 places, so will travel around more. Probably also will want to do a couple of activities. To be on the safe side, I'd increase that average daily budget to AUD $100 (also because you're going at the very peak of high season, when things will simply be more expensive). So AUD $3000 (or ~€2000) should be a good baseline. Just watch those paid activities - it's trivial to spend much more money every day without feeling that you're splurging.
