Driving US West & National Parks. September 2013!

I'm currently in the US on an Amtrak train to DC. But will be ditching my rail pass when i get to the west coast. I would like to rent some form of vehicle (i'm 27 male and english btw) and see as much as possible.

You're going to the Grand Canyon and Zion - what about Bryce, Arches and Canyonlands too? And Death Valley? We went ten years ago and did a loop from Las Vegas - Grand Canyon, Page, Monument Valley, Moab (for Arches and Canyonlands), Bryce, Zion then Death Valley, Mammoth Mountains and then Yosemite before San Jose and flying to Hawaii from San Fransisco. In my opinion, Arches, Canyonlands and Bryce were just as good as the Grand Canyon and better than Zion. Moab is the perfect base for both Arches and Canyonlands. Google them and have a look at the pictures! Enjoy your trip!

I haven't formed a plan yet, those were just examples off the top of my head. Though your lists are very helpful as i'll just base my decisions on what other people recommend if i end up going solo.

Hi Nick,

I'm Max, 24, from London.

I'm flying in to Los Angeles on August 30th, and flying home on September 15th.

My plan is to do a road trip of California. I have already rented a car and booked myself into a hostel for the night I arrive.

I intend to see Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Oregon. In that order pretty much.

Hope the above sounds good to you.

Here's a thread where I spell out an itinerary for visiting many of the major national parks and monuments in the US west (not including Yellowstone and Yosemite) from Las Vegas.

If you do this as a circle tour, you can then visit Death Valley and Yosemite on your way from Las Vegas to San Francisco. Yellowstone is the most out-of-the-way of your destinations to get to (but definitely worth the visit).

Enjoy your travels.

Thanks Calcruzer!

Hi Max. I am planning to do allot more, as i believe 2 weeks is far too tight of a timescale. I am flexible, but i don't want to rush though as what you propose is very tight. I do appreciate the invite however!

Hi Nick! Me and my friend are arriving in LA on the 1st September and travelling around a few of the places on your list between then and the 1st October when we fly home. We've been hoping to find someone or a couple of people to share a car with for some of the trip. Send me a message or add me on facebook https://www.facebook.com/laurenbrum92 if joining up could be a possibilty

1 WEEK TO GO!!! :D

Hi Nick, I'm doing the west coast from the 26th sept- 27th Oct if you need a buddy

Thanks for the responses.

I actually booked the west coast part of my trip a few days ago. So i'm doing the west coast by Amtrak and coming back down to then rent a car around the 15th September for a month or so.

I will be using the car for national parks and seeing some of the rural usa.

I would of updated this thread but thought i was kinda dead by now. Best of luck with your travels.
