My boyfriend and I are looking to go to Australia under a working holiday visa in early 2012, living in the country for up to a year.
Hey Jen,
I am coming to the end of my working holiday in Australia and heading to New Zealand in a couple of months. I travelled round every state, getting to every city but found my spiritual home in Melbourne, becasue as you say it is an arty, cutural place and the bars and music scene etc is the best. My background is in TV production and I found freelancing was easier to get work because you can only work for a company for 6 months under the current visa rules, so most TV companies preferred to hire an Aussie or New Zealander who didn't have this issue.
Other than that, there are loads of recruitment agencies if you just need to earn some Aussie Dollars (they pay very well indeed) and I worked for a hospitality company called Octopus, where by I worked behind bars at big events. You choose your shifts whenever you want and you get to go to things like the F1, tons of big gigs, AFL etc etc. You'll need to get a Responsible service of Alcohol certificate ($50 and a complete waste of time in my opinion but if you want to serve beers you gotta do it).
Other than that, enjoy! I'll definately miss it and if you do stay in Melbourne I strongly suggest staying in Brunswick where I'm staying at the moment, or nearby in Fitzroy or Northcote. After a few nights out you'll realise why!
