Cannot remember San Jose airport too well but San Jose in general is a place at night where you really dont want to be around on your own.
The airport is actually pretty comfortable, as I recall. The passenger lounge part anyway. I just wonder if they would let you into that part so early. It's safe and quiet in there, but that could be a problem
There are plenty of hostels and hotels very near the airport. The twon of Alajuela is 2 km from San Jose (COSTA RICA) airport.
