Where to stay in LA? Beaches? Downtown? + a few more Q's.

Hi All,

It ain't anywhere near as good as it used to be when I first went there over three decades ago but Santa Monica isn't bad. Some places have parking but in town, most do not unless you go to a motel.

For accommodation you might try lowcostholidays, using the "Hotel Only" option.

Get yourself a good road map. LA is BIG as in I drove 85 miles across it once. To get anywhere, people drive to the nearest freeway, drive along that to near their destination then get off it again as taking local roads takes forever. Directions at forks in the motorway may be compass points rather than locations so know if you are going north, east or whatever.

The freeways get VERY BUSY anywhere near rush hours and with undertaking allowed it becomes far worse as slow vehicles hog what elsewhere would be the fast lanes.

With just four days you are going to have to narrow right down what you want to see as there is lots and lots there to see, often separated by quite big distances so a lot of travelling time. Leave nothing valuable in your car if you are not in it.

Because of "drive-aways" at garages, often you will be expected to hand over money first, say $20-$40 and if there is any change after you have filled your car, the attendant will give you it.

Do be very careful about going out at night. Have say $50 in small bills handy and in the unlikely circumstance that you are held up, tell them that is all the money you have (as you are going home tomorrow) and they'll probably accept it and go off to bother someone else.

Wow, is it really that bad?

Anyone else with suggestion on good areas to stay?

Thanks again
