Me and my girlfriend are looking to travel South America and Mexico. Our plans are still very rough so we can use all help possible. The rough plan I'm talking about:
You could do Buenos Aries, Chile then Peru. Do look in on Lima as many miss it out for some reason. Then to Cusco (lots of travel agents) where there are a number of places worth visiting in town and further away, including the inevitable Machu Picchu. After Peru you could go to Quito in Ecuador. I'd take a plane from there. Maybe Panama. Honduras has settled down and Guatemala.
Mexico is VERY dangerous at the moment. There are a number of drug cartels fighting for supremacy and people are dying grisly deaths (as in chopped up and hung from a bridge), but also civilians are getting caught up in it and shot or worse. If you go there, do check up for dangerous areas beforehand on the internet.
Pick pocketing and petty theft is an annoyance in South and Central America so guard all your valuables all the time.
America and Europe has a lot of cheap airlines, but not South America (where flights are usually best booked early as possible and even outside the country.)
Must do's: Get your injections, malaria tablets, and insurance in case worse comes to worse.
Thank you for the advise, we ll have a look in the itinerary you posted. We didn t realy think about Ecuador but will have a look in it.
About Mexico, I also heard that kind of stories but wouldn t it rather be the north of the county that s dangerous? If we would just stick to a hop-on-hop off bus that takes us to the more southern / eatern spots, I think we would be safe enough?
Thanks again for the advise!
