Traveling California for 2 weeks in August

Hello,
My gf and I (I'm 22) are going to travel Calif. for 2 weeks. We are both under 25, so renting a car is out of the question pretty much. We have a flight into San Diego on Aug. 2 and out of San Fran. on August 16th. Anything in between is up in the air. We want to see some of LA, but other than that, any suggestions would be helpful.

Stop in Newport Beach for a night or two, and dont spend too long in LA. Stop in Santa Barbara, and The Green Tortoise hostel in San Fran is a great party hostel

Actually, there are two ways to get around this under age 25 problem:

(1) If you don't mind renting from Hertz (that is, if their rates are reasonable) and if you are picking up your car before September 30th, then go to the following website and use the code provided:

https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/specialoffers/index.jsp?targetPage=under25feewaived.jsp

The code is PC# 144314 and they will waive the extra charge for you being under 25.

(2) Option 2 (which others who are coming after Septermber 30 should use or if you think Hertz's rates are too high) is to go to Costco and buy an executive membership for $100. You can then rent on Budget Rent-A-Car and they will waive the $25 per day extra charge--plus they will take an additional 10% off the total rental car cost.

You really need to drive around California. Taking public transportation only makes sense in San Francisco--and while its a beautiful city, you really need to see the other great spots in California

Thanks for the suggestions!

Calcruzer: Awesome. I looked into it. $264/week is very reasonable, but then they charge "Airport Concession Fee Recovery On Flight Arrivals" of 83.05 USD and others. If I chose a location other than the airport, perhaps I could avoid this fee. Have any suggestions? Ideally we want to rent on the 2nd and return on the 16th of August. With all the fees, the total is $928 (it will take away $211 upon rental based off that coupon, according to the site).

Know of any other car rental places that will waive the under 25 fee?

Thanks!

I don't know much about renting cars, but if you have one, head to the Point Reyes Hostel just outside of San Francisco at Point Reyes National Seashore.

Other places in the bay area worth visiting are the towns of Point Reyes Station, Bodega & Bodega Bay, Calistoga (wine country and hot springs), further south Santa Cruz and Capitola.

FYI... The California coast will be foggy in July and August, bring a sweater.
