Don't tell them anything!
They can only track what you earn in the UK, they've no right to ask for payments from money you've earnt abroad.
TBH I think you're worrying a bit too much.
We are due to go in 2 weeks and I wasn't planning on telling the Student Loans Company.
My husband hasn't even been paying his back for the past two years because they haven't 'found' him in the PAYE system (not that he's been hiding or anything, just been in and out of jobs!)
I'll change my address to my parents address and if they get anything threatening to do anything then I will get in touch - but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much, I've known loads of people who have gone away and not told them and they've had no problems.
Unfortunately they know I'm going away following my phone call to them so there's no where to hide!

RugbyJock - they do have a right to ask for payments for money earnt abroad (check the sneaky terms and conditions you signed). If they didn't expect money back from working abroad anyone could just move overseas and never pay it back..... Oh a girl can dream!
I don't live in the UK but I currently have a student loan in Canada and the way it works here is that you don't have to start paying back until six months after you finish school. Then you can pay the minimum payment each month of any amount of money.
I, however will have my student loan paid off this summer so my parents won't have to deal with it when I am gone for the year.
Apologies, is seems you are right. I'm going from personal experience where I didn't tell them anything. I wasn't earning over the threshold before I'm pretty sure they didn't take anything while I was away (Australia 6 months)
