Hey im heading to oz in Jan 2012 on my own and im just wondering where the best place to stay would be? i plan on staying in melbourne for 4/5 months, so would i need a hostal or an apartment?

Melbourne is expensive. Maybe try to stay in a suburb and bus into town?

I stayed in Melbourne for a few months when I was doing my Aussie trip a couple of years ago. Stayed in Greenhouse Backpackers which i would recommend, great hostel, very good location, added extras and freebies, but is a bit on the expensive side. Then moved into the suburbs with a couple of friends I made at the hostel, found a little 2-bed in the Kensington/Newmarket area, and caught the tram or train into the city from then on. Hope you enjoy Melbourne as much as I did!
