Definitely drive down Highway 1 part of the way for gorgeous views! Los Angeles is lots of fun and San Diego is a cool city. I love Newport beach (SW of LA), which is kind of mellow and has great surfing (though the water will probably be too cold when you go!) if you're looking for that.
thanks for that, yeah i was worrying a wee bit with the time of year i was going what the weather would be like but...i would rather be in California in the rain than in Scotland haha
