Travel tips for Iceland

Hi Folks,
I have my camping equipment ready and have rented 4wd so will be drinving and camping in Iceland for 3 weeks in July. Anyone any tips on how else to keep the budget down (will cook basic food for ourselves), eg are there places that are cheaper than others (I guess more out of the way hot springs would be cheaper than those close to Reyk) or off the beaten track musts? I love hiking, diving, and river kayaking so any tips on how to do these on a budget would be great!

Im back from Iceland....thought Id just write a quick review for anyone interested in travelling on the cheap. I think I spent around 1600 Euro, including flights, for 3 weeks in Iceland, so it wasnt nearly as expensive as I thought it was going to be. Its stunningly beautiful by the way, and one of the coolest places Ive ever been. Amazingly varied hiking trails, great secluded hotspots, quite remote camping with adequate facilities, mad landscapes: glaciers, lava fields, volcanic features, fjords, cliffs, etc etc
Anyway:
-Car is a great idea, keeps costs way down, as you dont have to pay for buses or expensive tours, you just drive to all the locations yourself (you dont have to pay into anything in Iceland, you just drive to all the springs, lava tubes etc, there are no entrance fees anywhere). We rented off Viking Car Rental, really nice people, very flexible and willing to knock a bit off the price if you bargain.
-Camping is only 7 euro per night in most places.
-if you have a car you can bring/rent cooking equipment (we emailed our car rental guys in advance and got our stove from them the day we arrived) and then you eat on the cheap too. This is also a great way of eating well, as otherwise the only way to eat cheaply is to eat fast food, and almost anywhere you go you'll need to be able to cook for yourself.
- a night out in Reykjavik is pricey enough, but no more so than Dublin, and its very very funky! Buy wine in the duty free on the way through the airport, that saved us a good bit of cash too!

sounds like you had an awesome. time. thanks. for the review.
