I will spend most of August travelling through the Galopogoes and then hopefully the southern Peruvian jungle near Cusco. Is it wise to go it alone, with a group or try to find a companion?

Go with a group. Lots of people of all ages do go trekking. Do make sure that you have any necessary injections, malaria tablets and the like (most pharmacies can tell you what you need). Health insurance is handy too.
Cusco is near 10,000 feet up so you may get some altitude sickness. Machu Picchu is a mere 7,800 feet up.
