Amsterdam is expensive. Staying anywhere in Europe is August is even more expensive. I had a look at some lower end hotels and they are EXPENSIVE for that period.
If you are staying there for some time, I would try to rent an apartment on the edge of town where I could get a bus or tram to where I wanted to go. You can also cook your own food there which is much cheaper than eating out. However with rentals you usually pay 2 months deposit which you get back when you leave.
