31 year old ditching the office job for RTW trip!

Hi all,

Hi Martin

We are sort of in the same boat - 28 & 27 and we are packing it all in for a year or so! Husband was made redundant for the second time in 2 years, so we thought this time it was the push we needed to get out there and see the world.

So we've been selling everything we own, the second car is due to go today, we are living with no sofas, tables, beds, chairs and due to move out of the house on Friday next week and fly to Australia (Perth) on the 28th of June.

We are going about the travelling slightly differently, we are aiming to stay in Australia for the full year, work our way around and generally save up enough money to fund the rest of the travelling. Then we are doing the same as you, Asia, Veitnam, Cambodia, India we'll see NZ and Fiji and we'd like to do South America and maybe even some of the USA if funds will allow, probably will be away for around 2 years. Counting down now, only 8 days left to work!

congratz martin!

Thanks guys good to see im not the only one making these big decisions around here lol. I really just cant wait to leave now im getting rather impatient! I will also need to find some work along the way, im hoping thats manageable in this current climate otherwise ill be home sooner than I want! You guys are lucky you have each other to go with!

Hey Martin

Im in the same boat, 25, and taking redundancy in October and i've decided that if i dont go now i never will. Im planning a year long trip hopefully, same destinations as you. Its quite scary the thought of going alone but ive heard you meet loads of people along the way.

Would be good to have a chat so inbox me xx

Hey man, doing the same thing here. I'm currently traveling Oz alone, and while it's great it'd be good to have some mates around when I hit Asia and possibly Europe. I'm a 27 year old Canadian guy.

I was tired awaiting around for mates at home to plan and come with me, so I took off. I am a systems engineer and packed it in to travel. Sold all my stuff, just me and my pack these days.

I'm looking to finish up in Oz around Oct/Nov with hopefully some cash saved up from working here in Oz as well. The strong Oz dollar helps a lot too.

Hey Cameron,
So what sort of job do you have in Oz? Was it easy enough to find work? That looks like you could be in Asia at a similar time to myself then!

I am totally in the same boat as you! I finally came to the conclusion that if I dont do this now....ill never had the chance to again! Im 26 and I work in the engineering department at an aerospace company here in North America. But I am just restless and need to get out there and do something that i have always wanted to do! I plan on saving as much as possible until the end of the year and then taking off at the beginning of the year. I am still so stuck on where I want to go first. I was thinking of ireland/scotland/england but now i am leaning more towards OZ/new zealand/thailand. So many amazing places to see in the world!! Haha I dont have a time limit....just me and my back pack! i am planning to be gone 6 months to a year and im not even sure if ill evd up coming back home or stay somewhere else for a while. Its exciting to not know what all the future holds!

Just like you, my friends haven't been able to plan a trip with me so I am just gonna do it and go solo! kind of scary to think of doing this alone but I am hoping to meet lots of people along the way! we should meet up somewhere! I cant wait to get out of this country for a while! I can't stop thinking about it!

Its definitely nice to know that I'm not the only one doing this amazing life changing experience!

~jessie

Hi Jessie yeah it is good to find people in the same boat as me too and that they arent all 18! Lol. It should be a life changing experience well I certainly hope it is anyway!

Glad to hear you are keen on visiting my homeland Scotland aswell! I really think you would have a great time here! Where do u think you will be heading first then? I found it very hard to choose where to go aswell as There is a tendency to try n do too much! Im startin to get impatient really wanna go now lol

Martin

Hi I'm from a bit younger crowd (I'm 23), However I ran accross your post and felt I ought to share, That my daughter and I as well have begun the first few steps in our journey 'round the world. We however have a slightly different agenda, in that we plan to be vagabonds, roaming our beautiful earth in a gypsy-esc fashion, deep into eternity. I would love to hear from some others who have any experience with world travel on a budget as well! ( or traveling with young children for that matter) Any nuggets of wisdom you can offer us would be MOST appreciated. We wish you all the best of luck and the most adventure on you journeys...
