We were there last week and had a great couple of days - went to At the Top - which is the viewing platform 420m (or so) up the Burj Khalifa - it is actually only about half way up... so we were a little disappointed, and then had day on the waterslides at Aquaventure - and Lost Chambers aquarium was pretty good.
It is Ramadan at the moment, which is strictly observed in Dubai. This means that food and drink is not available in public places until Ifsar (sunset). Some hotels have a limited food service, but you cannot eat in public. Ramadan this year finishes on Wed 7th August at sunset and is the start of Eid - which apparently is great fun!! If you can delay arrival a couple of days you might find it more enjoyable.
We found it very hot and subsequently were a bit weak without food.
