Cheers and How long can you rent them for the scooters ?

Lewis - sounds like a male name. With mostly beaches in your list of things to do I would guess you are not a retiree or older than 50. Too much beach sun now you may regret when you are older! Older tourists over 50 have already noticed their faces looking older than the rest of their bodies. Phuket is the most expensive city in Thailand. Even Bangkok is cheaper because of cheap city transportation.

"i would like to stay out there as long as possible...."

How long is a piece of string? If you are coming from a country far, far away from Thailand having a round trip ticket is usually cheaper than two one way flights! This is using major full service airlines. This means you need a definite departure date! Staying as long as possible means using your own money since you can't legally work in Thailand to augment your finances. How long you can stay in Thailand depends on the country passport you use to enter with.

Top killer of tourists in Thailand is death by motorcycle! Accidents with scooters included!

I suppose if you are young and want to sit around with other young (mostly male) tourists you can visit Koh Phangan. Sit around getting wasted looking at the full moon. Maybe sampling the local dope too. Very popular young tourist destination.

You don't mention any interest in adult nightlife. This is available the Bangkok and Pattaya area. Phuket too but most expensive. Pattaya is a beach area close to Bangkok, cheaper than Phuket and other beaches down south. But the beach is crappy for actual swimming. Okay for sunburning and jogging and running. But the nightlife and hotels is cheaper than Bangkok and the bus ride to get there is around 124 baht for a 2 hour ride. But more younger tourists head for other beach areas.

See if you can tear yourself away from beach areas so you can fit in a visit to Northern Thailand. See some jungle areas, visit some villages, ride some elephants, etc. This rounds out your holiday experience.

Spend the final night or two back in Bangkok. This allows you to buy last minute souvenir junk and also be close enough for a taxi ride to the airport. For hotel help mention a price range. If you are under 21 maybe the Khao San Road (KSR) area of Bangkok. Over 30 and interested in the ladies - Sukhumvit area. Some areas of Bangkok allow you to use the city rail services. This is Airport Rail Link from Suvarnabhumi (up to midnight) and the Skytrain for connection to city areas. Both of these rail services connect with the subway too. But no rail service available in the KSR area.

Know how much per night you can spend for your hotel rooms or hostels. When you ask for hotel help also say what you want to spend in Thai baht. Wait until you get to Thailand to get the better exchange rate. Most major currencies accepted. Also you can use debit cards and travelers checks too. No problem changing money 24 hours a day at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Thailand has an old and rich history. Many temples and other historic sites. Museums, national parks, etc. A simple Google search will give you some help on "what to see and do" in Thailand. A travel guide will also give you some of the historical things to see in Thailand.

Research scams to avoid in Thailand. Often this involves buying gems and gold, palace closed, tuk-tuk kidnapings! (This is where they bring you from place to place hoping you buy some junk for a free or very cheap ride.) In Bangkok meter taxis are cheaper than tuk-tuk rides. This is when you use the meter and not bargain the cost of the ride. When riding on buses, especially those booked from travel agencies in the KSR area, do not leave money, passport, valuables, cell phones in your checked in bag! (To avoid theft!) Lots of real bus stations in Thailand anyway!

Good luck.
