Undecided on where to go?

Hi everybody,

Give us some clues about what you want to see and do. Culture, mountains, architecture, wildlife, beaches, partying?

Sorry..should have said! Both of us are really interested in seeing culture.

Why is Europe and the US your only options?

Cheers,
Terry

They are the places we would like to explore. Is it better to go on set tours of places? Or is it a better experience to organise it yourself?

Well if time is limited, a set of tours will be a less hassle and more expensive. For first time travelers, why not push it a bit further and have fun organizing it all? it's always exciting to plan it out and see it work out. Or changed by people you meet on the road.

I always enjoy organizing my trip myself. To me that is half of the fun when it comes to traveling (maybe I should have been a travel agent). But if you want culture, as an American, I'd suggest Europe. My reasons are that it is more compact, meaning you can see more countries and cultures, than in the US, also, traveling is more convenient via transportation, and many more years of history and culture in Europe.

I have been to Europe a few times and am now planning a Central Europe excursion to visit Poland, Hungry, Croatia, and Czech Republic among others. That being said there are several other great regions depending on how long you have and what your interests are culturally.

Hope this helps you out.

You have so many options! I have travelled around Europe and the UK, Canada and the USA (plus some Asian countries). For a first time traveller you should chose what type of culture you want to explore and work from that. I could give you so many suggestions it would take up a book but have you thought about Hawaii? It has the benefit of being compact, has a strong Polynesian culture with the American culture thrown in. It has fantastic scenery and although parts are very touristy (think Waikiki) you can still experience a tranquil trip if you want. Don't just stay on Oahu, also visit at least one of the other islands, like Hawaii (the Big Island), or Kauai. The Big Island has a lot of rugged scenery as well as tropical rainforests - depending on which side of the island you stay on - it also has Kilaueu - one of the most active volcanoes on earth. All islands have had many TV shows and movies filmed on them, so do a movie tour! And definitely if the budget stretches do a helicopter tour on any of the islands (with the doors off!!) Absolutely breath taking.

Hawaii is a place which I would really want to see..however a little put off by the travel distance from places on the east coast that we want to see such as New York.

Hawaii is a bit out of the way if you want to see things on the east coast. The closest I've been to New York is Newark Airport! One day I'll get to New York.

Washington DC has lots of things to see and do - Jefferson Memorial, Smithsonian, the Mint, the White House, Alexandria, the various war memorials (Vietnam, Korean, WWII), the Mall, Ford's Theatre, Arlington, Mount Vernon and so much more.

Pennsylvania is also an interesting place to visit especially Philadelphia. There are many Amish in Pennsylvania and you can go to an Amish farm, downtown Philadelphia has many historic areas, I even went to Ephrata Cloister - now that was interesting.
