Hi all!
I went to Jordan a few years ago and pretty much followed the same itinerary as yours, but spent 2 full days in Petra, so if you can spare more time I'd recommend it. We could have spent longer there but were exhausted from all the walking! Also on your way down to Petra, it's worth stopping in Madaba and Mt Nebo.
We hired a driver to get around the country - I can't remember how much he charged but I remember at the time that it was very reasonable, especially between 2 of us. If you want his details let me know, and I can send you them in a private message. He was amazing and totally made our trip to Jordan!
We spent a day in Wadi rum in a 4 x 4, and the slept in the desert which was great; this was all organised by our driver. On the way back to Amman he took us via the Dead Sea where we did the mandatory float!
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the feedback! It's gratifying to know my idea doesn't sound too bad.
Could you send me the details of the driver? Sounds great, certainly good to get more info than The Rough Guide.
No worries; I have sent you a message with the details.
Just remembered something else - we did the day trip to Jerash independently on a public bus which was quick and easy.
Enjoy Jordan!
We plan almost the same tour, and have 9 days in the Easter. We are thinking about taking a flight to Aqaba, take a tour (camel+jeep) to the desert (Wadi Rum). Then take a whole day in Petra. Next on our list are a trip to the Dead Sea, before we cross the boarder in to Israel.
In Israel we thinking about see Jerusalem and Bethlehem before we are going to Tel Aviv for a flight to Istanbul for a whole day!
Jerash in Jordan we will check out. It has not been on our list, before now
But do anyone know if there is possible to get visas at the airport even if we arrive in the middle of the night?

Where can we find a driver? How does that work?
We're not sure how to get around except by taxi.
Another question, about money. Did people take all their money in advance? Do bank machines in Jordan work with western cards? I assume that traveller's cheques won't be accepted many/any places.
