My wife & I have traveled (backpacked) far, wide and often but we are going to an entirely new area - Southern Africa- some time between June & December 2014. We intend traveling for 3-4 months (from Oz) probably between Kenya & South Africa though Ethiopia is tempting. We love scenery & wild-life, hanging with the locals, food, adventure but too old now for extreme physical activity. Can you tell us -
1. How many game parks is too many for 1 trip and which are the best?
2. Is a long safari camping tour the best way for a large part or is travel over that large area feasible another way?
3. The must-sees & must do's?
4. The best route to get there from Sydney - price and comfort trade-off?
5. Best months to go
6. Festivals & other events worth seeing
7. Suggested itinerary
I just came back from South Africa. It was my second trip there. If you want to visit a game reserve I would recommend the Hluhluwe Umfolozi reserve. It is north of Durban. St Lucia reserve is close to it and the beach was very beautiful. If you want to see more of the big 5 animals I recommend a night time safari. I was able to see zebra, giraffes, elephants, rhino's, water buffalo and many other animals. It was too late in the day to see the big cats when we drove through the reserve. You can take a Hippo and Croc tour there too.
Definitely go to Cape Town and Robben Island. Table Mountain is a must.
This last trip I went to Zimbabwe to see Victoria Falls. I highly recommend seeing this waterfall. I would see if from the Zimbabwe side and not the Zambia side. You need your yellow fever immunization to go to the Zambia side. Check to see when the rainy season is. The locals told me that it is beautiful during the rainy season.
There is a hotel in Victoria Falls that feed the vultures at certain times of the day. I missed it but I saw pictures of it. Hundreds of birds fly in for 30 minutes then fly off.
Thanks Jenster
