Most states give you 30 days to register a vehicle. Not sure about Calif. but will check for you next week. If you buy from a dealer, he will do all the paperwork and you should be able to drive to So. Dakota and register it there. Good luck.

I called Calif DMV and they give you 20 days to register a vehicle. Plates stay with the vehicle in Calif. NV requires new plates for each new owner. You will need to buy insurance, but you could drive to South Dakota using the Calif plates and register it there. SD will take the Calif plates and issue you new ones. Good luck with your trip.
