Hi guys, I'm new in Thailand and I'm planning to travel Chiang Mai , Chiang rai and the rest of the north by land (from Bangkok). anyone who can share recommendations or tips on travelling north by land?(vehicle options) ......thank you so much in advance!
There are cheap and regular buses from Bangkok up to Chaing Mai - I got an overnight one and it was fairly comfortable.
There are plenty buses going up north, trains however go only up to Chiang Mai. You can book bus tickets Bangkok - Chiang Mai at -snip-
There are quite some companies running buses in the North to Lampang, Chiang Rai, Mae sai, you won't have problems traveling there, as thai transport system is quite advanced (if not in hi-tech sense, but in coverage for sure).

You may consider also railways option - at least you can sleep over night which saves you a night in the hotel. If you take 19:30 train you'll be just fine. Price is about THB 750
Hi bex, thank you for your response. I am staying alone in Thailand and going up Chiang Mai alone as well, which Thai bus line can you recommend? also, do they have e-ticketing websites in Thailand for easier transaction and less communication? haha I can't speak and understand Thai . Thank you so much.!!!
btw , i'm planning to have my CHiang mai escapade on Wed or Thurs next week (26 or 27 March)
Vito,
All the travel shops in BKK will put you on private or tourist buses. Many reports of theft on these buses. Yes, they are cheap and convenient. Usually you walk from the travel shop to the bus. My advice is to pass. Use the bus system the Thai people use. Get yourself over to the bus station and use a gov't licensed bus. For Chiang Mai it would be . No need to book ahead of time. Buses leave basically in the early am or early pm. If you take the overnight bus, you save 1 nights accommodation. You also arrive early am, perfect time to pick a GH you want to stay at. Use the , top of this page. Highly rated GH appear first. I would also ask the travellers in BKK is they have a fave GH in CM they would recommend. Good luck with your planning.

I can't remember the name of the company I used, but most of the private companies will be pretty similar. I booked by just going into one of the many travel/tour agencies in Bangkok; it's not really necessary to book online as they are all used to dealing with tourists/travellers and will speak good English. Just head to the Khao San road or Soi Rambuttri areas and you 'll find travel agencies everywhere who can arrange your transport.
