Hi guys,
Are you aware of the "wet season"? If not, look it up, and consider reversing the order of your all planned out trip from Sydney to Cairns.
Visa, assuming you mean a working holiday visa: most necessary information can be found on . That's also the cheapest and best place to apply. Pretty easy and self-explanatory. The most common question we still get about it is if you are bound to the expected arrival date which they ask you to fill in, and the answer is no; it's just for them to get a rough idea of numbers spread over the year, but you can enter anytime between the day the visa's been granted and one year later.
bank account: Walk into any bank branch within the first few weeks after arriving in the country, carrying your passport and AUD $50 for an initial deposit. Tell them you want to open an account, fill in some forms, tell them not to send you any bank statements, and give them your hostel's address to send your debit card to. It'll arrive about a week later. Use internet banking from your own laptop, or someone trusted at home, to transfer your money to this bank account. (Some banks also offer the option to open a bank account from the UK, but you'll still need to visit a bank branch to show them your passport.)
The big banks with ATMs in most places are ANZ, WestPac, NAB and CommonWealth. Pretty much indistinguishable for backpacker purposes, though if you can plan your number of withdrawals per month, it's worth seeing which ones currently have a no-fee account (this varies from year to year). WestPac did misguided astro-turfing on this forum a while ago, so all other things being equal, those'd be the first ones to give a miss. I personally went with ANZ 10 years ago, and had nothing to complain about.
Oh, and that amount of money should last you about 3 months, living regular (frugal) backpacker style. You'll need to calculate in quite a bit of time to find work, though, and more before you'll get your first paycheck. Be careful with that. (Jobs tend to be particularly scarce on the ground in the runup to xmas; either start looking immediately in October, or be certain you can last without until January.)

Hi, I'm flying to Sydney at the start of september. Planning on doing ultimate oz but havent booked it yet and then doing the same (travelling up to cairns) might hire a car or with a bus/rail pass need to look at prices and things first really. I'll probably look for bar work or something when I'm there x
Thanks for all the info!
Bethan. My friend (female, 22) is also thinking about coming with me around start/mid October. If you're about, perhaps we could travel together!
I'll be over then as well, not sure where in october/november though, most likely down south though around sydney or west alittle.. sander is right about the wet season athough it is hit and miss alittle, i was in cairns from november 2013 to march 2014 and there was bugger all rain tbh, was some real hot and humid days though, laying by the lagoon i was sure i was going to literally melt into nothing haha
Hi I am looking to fly out end of October and looking for some travel buddies. Would be great to arrive and meet up with people ive previously spoken too. Pretty daunting travelling alone!
Have you thought about the oz intro? Im not sure whether to do it or not? Where are you flying from?are you looking to get work straight away or travel for a bit then work?
Im saving at the minute. Looking to take around £3000.
Really eager to meet people and try new things so hope to hear from you all x
Hi all!
Ive been looking at doing the RealGap with the Oz Intro, so looking to stay in Sydney for at least 6 months doing work then travel for a few more months before i head back home, depending on how much im enjoying it! I am looking to travel at end of September/beginning of October time. I was hoping to save £3/4k and would be flying from either Gatwick or Heathrow. Would be nice to meet up with people and talk to people that would be out there the same time as me as ive never travelled before, let alone by myself
X
Hi Charlotte i think ive replied to a message you posted earlier
Id love to try and find a travel buddy whos on my wave length lol!
My plan is to find work as soon as possible.
What work are you looking to get, ideally?
Xx
