Hey Guys!
I'm a 27 year old female looking to go travelling at the end of the year, with the main drive of getting a working visa in New Zealand! I went travelling alone in 2012 to Oz, Fiji, USA and NZ however I only travelled and never worked, since coming back to the UK (my home) I've not stopped thinking about going back! Due to a personal mishap I never managed to see the whole of NZ, some of the South island and only Auckland in the North. However the time I spent there I loved, but Auckland not so much due to what happened! Anyways, has any one done a working holiday visa in NZ? Or has any advice? What I really want to do is find work in Wellington or the South island, not so much Auckland, but whenever I look it up on forums or travel sites it seems to be the main place to go for work. So yeah, if anyone has done this or something similar I would over to hear from you!
Sarah
I went to NZ on a working holiday visa and ended up living there for 5 years altogether. I was based in Auckland and I loved it; it's not the kind of city most people fall love with straight away though as you have to get to know it and explore it. The city centre isn't Auckland's best part - it's all about the suburbs, which most tourists inevitably don't see at first. Most of my shopping, eating, drinking, and even many of my jobs, were in suburbs rather than the city centre.
Auckland is your best bet for work in NZ, but Wellington should have plenty of opportunities too and there will be plenty of seasonal work in the South Island.
Let me know if you need any more specific info or tips and I'll try and help. If you do end up in Auckland I can advise on which suburbs are good options to live in.
Further to my above post, have a look at for houseshares and jobs (and lots of other stuff!). is the main jobs site in NZ. has some seasonal jobs and other backpacker info.
Hope this helps.
Hey there!
Thank you so much for all the information! The thought of working in Auckland's suburbs does sound alot more appealing! When I was there last I was mainly based in the city centre for a few days and never got a great vibe from it, but the suburbs sound better, so this helped so much!
I'm going through all the links in your second post now, it really has eased my mind. I bet you had the best time staying there for 5 years! Will definitely be in touch if I need anything else! You've been a real help
No problem. Good luck with your planning and let me know if you need any more info.
Hey! Ive been working and living in nz since last july. I spent my first 6 months in queenstown and just wow! I dont think ill ever lice anywhere as beautiful again such an amazing experience. When are you planning on going? If its fery soon I would suggest heading down there you would get work easily but once august hits it maybe harder as obviously lots of backpackers go there for the season but seriously consider working there you wont regret it! Also what kind of work are you looking for? Im talking from a hospitality point of view! I then moved to wdlkington mid jan and I have never found it so easy to get work in a city. I obviously came at the right time everywhere seemed to be hiring as it was just before sevens I had about 4 jobs to choose from and im working in a seafoid restaraunt now and loving it! Wellington is an awesome city apart from the weather! It not too big and its so safe and the people are lovely! But qt is like nowhere else! I hope this is helpfull!
@unabuna88 - Soooooo jealous. I head out to Auckland end of August and then I'm flying down to Queenstown for some skiiing and then I have no idea what to do. I really wanna stay in Queenstown but it will be pretty cold so not sure really. Auckland would be brilliant as well because of the city vibe
How long are you out there for?
I have lived in NZ for a year. If you want easy accept jobs that are not permanent try to go to Auckland. They have tons of jobs there. I worked in Pak n' Save for 3 months .
I really can't comment on Auckland as I haven't been I'm heading home in July because my visa is up but I've seriously had such a blast! I have to say nz is way more up for hiring backpackers than oz and both my jobs have not been casual which is great cause it means I get holiday pay and sick days! I imagine you'll get something easily and the best thing is you can just leave and head somewhere else if your not loving it! One thing I should mention tho is pay is not great in nz you earn half as much as oz and the cost of living is still high but having said that I've still managed to save and have a great social life! Good luck and enjoy it!!
