2nd year visa?

A bit of a long shot but currently in Oz on a working holiday visa and I am looking into doing my second year here so need to do my 88 days agricultural/farm work. Does anyone who is over here (or done similar) have any contacts for anything useful or any general advice?

Alright mate. How has it been ? How much money did you take ? Is it easy to find work ? Cheers

A common misconception is that it has to be farm work, the actual process just involves doing the designated days in locations where the work is beneficial to that area, you could work, in an office, shop or bar as long as it is an area that meets the governments criteria. Check out noticeboards at backpacker hostels and bars.

That's not quite true. Office and bar work does not ever qualify. The work has to be both in an approved field (being indeed wider than just "farm work"; it's "plant and animal cultivation", "fishing and pearling", "tree farming and felling", "mining" or "construction"), and in "regional" Australia.

See the "specified work" section on the "visa applicants" tab of for full details of what the above entails.

Btw, Andy, you've been creating a lot of duplicate posts for the last ~3-4 days. Are you doing anything different when posting? Or getting any error messages?

Apologies Sander,

I Was sure that any work in the designated areas qualified, however, as you are certainly more of an authority on this subject, i will conceed on this occasion. Has this always been the case? I was in Australia in 2007 and this was the information i was given by someone who really should have known.

As to the duplicates, i have noticed and its a mystery to me also.

Strange. Bar and office work have never been eligible for a 2nd year WHV that I know of (and I've been answering questions on this subject since the 2nd year WHV was created). It actually used to be much more narrowly defined than the current list. Things like mining and construction were only added a couple (5-ish?) of years ago.

Sander. Is it easy to get a job in mining ?

I have no idea. I imagine it's the same as with everything: Depends on your qualifications, personality, perseverance, and a bit of luck. There must certainly be demand for labour, though, otherwise the industry wouldn't have been added to the list of industries where work in them is rewarded with a second year visa.

To the OP (and anyone else interested),

Remember that 'specified work' can also include volunteer work i.e. rebuilding damaged towns, homes, etc after disaster. Unfortunately, Australia is kind of prone to such disasters so I would suggest looking in some of these devastated areas around the country.

Also, consider WWOOFing or HelpX which would also qualify and generally include accommodation and not hundreds of other travellers going for the same job.

Seeing as how Melbourne does not qualify as being a regional area, it will be required for you to travel, Fishman9. If you want to stay close, , which is only an hour away, does qualify as being regional.

Good luck!
