Looking at this issue on-line ( & there are lots of opinions & options there ), it seems to me that the problem might be more with airlines than passport control. The airline might want you to comply with the rules of the first country you are flying to and not let you on the plane unless you have onward travel booked. Of course you might get past that only to have a problem with the first passport control you go through.
If you can overcome those hurdles, I think you should be ok once you are inside the Schengen Area if you are not using flights to cross borders.
An option would be to buy a ticket back home from somewhere, anywhere, that allows you to change it without too many penalties.

That's what I've found, but the information is inconsistent at best, and nobody seems to have an idea of what airlines, etc. I was hoping some fellow travelers would be able to provide a bit more information.
The problem is that I'm using flight points to purchase the bulk of my flights & should be flying with a star alliance airline. I have considered purchasing a budget flight/train/bus/ferry ticket within Europe, but I don't really want to have to do this every time I'm entering and exiting the schengen zone or the EU - such as to/from Croatia, Belarus, etc. I suppose that I could just take my chances but I'd like to know what they are first! Haha
