Best way to Mauritius from Zanzibar, Tanzania and local area

So far the flights I'm finding from Tanzania (Zanzibar or Dar Es Salaam) to Mauritius -one way- are like 1000$ USD, and 18+ hours (usually there's 1 stop at least). Is this the usual expectation?
I'm looking for alternative ideas/suggestions on airlines or services to get to Mauritius from Tanzania that's more reasonable..
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Looks a little tricky

Best I came up with was about $678 & around 8 hours using Farecompare. Dar es Salaam to Nairobi to Mauritius on Air Kenya

Almost better for 900 to 1000 pounds take a 7 or 8 day package, hotel & return flight from the UK with British Airways or any other UK outfit.

I wonder if there are any boats that make the trip. That might be e few days though.

Closest I can get by boat is takes about 4 days & I cannot see a price ( 225 euros but that was years ago ) or how to book it.

And of course you have to get from Tanzania to Madagascar which could be 'interesting' in itself.

Steve

I wouldn't mind taking a boat - in fact I would love to see a little bit of Madagascar even, I am intrigued! Will check out those links and farecompare site too. Thanks Steve!!

I have nothing better to do, so would you like me to keep looking?

I guess you are in or going to be in Tanzania. I have three blogo entries of my time there in case you are interested.

If you don't get to Mauritius, the Seychelles & Maldives are very pleasant too & also feature on my Blogo

Hi Steve, sure thing! Please share whatever information you can find. I really appreciate it.
And thank you for the information about your blogs - I am definitely planning to visit Zanzibar and do a couple Safaris in Tanzania later on.

Hi,

I think you will need to contact the Mauritius Shipping Corporation direct with a request for dates of passage & fees. Their June 2014 schedule is not out yet but to give you an idea, an old one for April has it leaving Port Louis Mauritius at 17:30 on 7/4 and arriving Port Tamatave, Madagascar 6:00 on 10/4. Departing again at 18:00 and back at Port Louis 6:00 on 13/4.

It also looks like they have ships that go to Reunion & the Seycheles too if that is of interest. It would be for me. I love being on the Ocean. Their ships look basic but comfortable.

I cannot find any other ships that go there apart from Cruise ships.

So - that leaves getting from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar to Madagascar.

I don’t see any boats that go from Madagascar to mainland Africa.

Lonely Planet has this

That thread also says there is no boat from Africa to Madagascar but does mention Air Tanzania from Dar Es Salaam to Madagascar via Moroni in the Comoros,

I see prices for flights from 753 to over 1000 - via Nairobi to Madagascar.

South African Air has flights from 500 dollars from Johannesburg to Madagascar.
565 dollars Johannesburg to Mauritius

A lot of money, but it is a long way.

It all does look very expensive & quite tricky.

I always do this sort of research for myself & quite enjoy it, but I hand it off off to my travel agent who changes it all around & usually for cheaper.

What are your actual plans? What year? What time of year? How Long? etc.

Steve

Hi Steve,

My plan is to visit Mauritius in the mid November 2014 timeframe (I can go to the other islands but I have some friends in Mauritius I will visit). I will likely be in Zanzibar around Nov 8ish and stay for a couple of days, and then ideally head over to Mauritius after. It is too bad there doesn't seem to be much reasonable options for direct

I don't have much free days for travel, ideally I can get to Mauritius in 1-2 days (3 travel days max) from Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam.

I could possibly do the other way - Mauritius first then Tanzania... but I'd like to save Mauritius for last.

Hi,

Very annoying! I don't see anything better than we have already explored. Air Mauritius & Tanzania Air do not seem to have a Mauritius to Tanzania connection, so you have to go via another country.

I would definitely go see my travel agent & see what she could come up with.

Hope you make it ok & I think you will but it will cost you bucks.

Zanzibar I liked a lot. Very exotic.

Steve
