I'm a 30 year old female first time traveller heading to Bangkok September time.
Hello - if your purpose is to travel alone then I can tell you that the actual transport and accommodation is easy to find; there are lots of dorms and hostels in this part of the world and they're not all party hostels. If you'd rather get over there and then see if there's anyone to travel along with then you've definitely picked one of the best areas in the world. Turning up on spec or booking a night or two in a hostel near Khao San Road in Bangkok would be the best place to start and then you're bound to find other travellers going round the same areas. Or you can get advice on how to plan the next leg of your trip and the best accommodation at the next stop from people who have just been there. It really is that easy. For information regarding a lone female travelling, I'm not the person who can advise you but I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can. Enjoy your trip!

Also wondered if anyone has thoughts on Stray Asia rather than going it alone? Works out more expensive but is it a better option for a first time lone backpacker?

I had never seen that site before. Looks like a great way to go. Might be a bit more expensive but they seem to get things nicely organised for you.

Hi Victoria!
I travelled solo tough SA-Asia in 2007 and it was one of the best things I've done in my life. My experience is that it was very safe, as long as you have a good head on your shoulders, and the travel itself was very easy (I mostly used boats and busses). Sure there will be moments when you feel lonely and wonder what the hell your doing (lol) but those feelings fade away fast.
Even though I went alone I rarely was alone, SA-Asia is a great place to meet fellow travellers and you'll make new friends fast.
Since it's been a while since my last trip and I'm only beginnig to plan my next trip I'm not sure I can recommend places right now - I'm sure you'll get tons of advice on that from others that are more up to date.
If you're not into party hostels (neither am I) I do recommend not staying near Khao San Road while in Bangkok. It's a fine place to visit and meet people but my experience is that it's best in small doses. On my last trip I went through Bangkok several times and I always stayed in "Chinatown", it's not so crowded with western tourist and it's not far from the major sights. Some of my travel buddies stayed there after having enough of KSR and they all loved it.
Hope this helps
Ps. I'm the same age and will be travelling though Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in September to October - who knows, maybe we'll run into one another!
I'm here now and solo . It's safe enough as king as you keep your head on your shoulders.
The first 2 nights are the worst but after that your wonder what you was worried about. I love it and I'll be coming back again to see more
