Travel diaries were the system in place before the blogs were created. They were really basic, and didn't allow for most of the things the blogs can do (like map integration, customizable themes, etc). You can't create a new diary anymore, but since the blogs were a big change, and diaries have one feature blogs don't have (password protection, so only people with the password can read them), people who already had a diary have the choice of keeping it, or automatically converting it into a blog. Most people chose the latter, but even so there's still a whole bunch of old diaries around.
This feature doesn't exist any more. It was one of the original features Travellerspoint launched with, but since then we added the blogging platform which is more powerful in every way. For people who started it before it was discontinued though, we have left the diary entries available.
