Hi. I'm flying to NZ in late July, I'm thinking I'll fly to Aukland first then make my way down to Christchurch seeing as many sights as I can over about 2 weeks. Im wondering if it would be best to hire a car or where I can find a suitable bus tour or the like. The only reason I dont want as a car is that Il be going alone and it would be better to meet people on a bus and I will get bored by myself. Can anyone help me with possible public transport that could be suited to me route?
Have a look at Naked Bus http://nakedbus.com/nz/bus/ or Intercity at http://www.intercity.co.nz/ .
From Auckland airport into the city, a taxi can be anything from NZD35 - 80 or more. Use the Airbus which travels from the airport through Mt Eden to Britomart and the ferry terminal in the city centre for NZD16 one-way - see http://www.airbus.co.nz/
Enjoy NZ!
I have twice travelled both islands by car. Easy to do, and you save on accommodation by not having to stay at expensive places in town. Also you go where you want, when you want so do not have to waste time waiting for transport which will only take you to certain places.
If you do not drop the car off where you picked it up, there will be a steep one way charge. At the ferry port when crossing islands, you drop your car off one side, travel across as a foot passenger and pick up another car from the same company the other side, at no extra cost.
In just two weeks you will not have time to get bored.
