Can my friends and family post comments by just subscribing to my blog by email without becoming a member? Can they still do this even if I have put in my settings that my blog is not open to everyone?
Yes, they can, if you set the following setting:
Anyone can comment (not just Travellerspoint members): Yes
That works independent of making the blog private (for which you have two options: unlisted ("Entries are listed on Travellerspoint") and password-protected ("Password protect your blog (makes your blog private)")
