Freaking out while travelling alone

Michael Tisone has indicated that this thread is about Asia

Kathmandu is tourist central. The place is packed with foreigners so it's easy to meet other tourists just like yourself, so what is the issue... are you not interacting with anyone?

If you can't handle being by yourself simply stick to the Gringo Trail and don't wander off the beaten path that is outlined in all the guide books. That keeps you immersed in hostels/bars/restaurants/tourist sites/etc. that are geared towards foreigners thus giving you a buffer to help keep the local culture at arms length.

Bottom line Michael, you have to take a hard introspective look at yourself and figure out why you're so upset. What is the root cause of your distress? There are lots of reasons why some people can't stand to be alone... just be honest with yourself and you should be able to work through this..

Good luck and I hope your trip takes a positive turn.

Cheers,
Terry

KTM can be depressing as it's not everybody's thing.
Just leave go treking you will make many friends in the first, day, just don't take a guide.
And if you are still in KTM move to hostel.
And on the ways there are so many people who are alone, just need to find them, they are looking for you too
Just really don't spend too much time in KTM

What exactly is it that you're freaking out about? Solitude? Not having anything to do? Not having anyone to talk to and share you experiences with? Feeling overwhelmed with everything you have to prepare or plan? Not understanding your surroundings?

To me, three days and then already moving on feels rushed. You need to learn to give yourself time to acclimatize and to reflect. Try to find a ritual for your days that allows you conscious time to just sit and let your mind wander over what you've been doing. A cup of tea and a book to read, or a diary to update, is a rather common thing for many travellers at the end of each day.

I've never been to Kathmandu, but I imagine it isn't the easiest place to start out at. Don't expect too much of yourself. Definitely don't push yourself to do non-stop sightseeing all day. Aimlessly wandering about in order to get a feel for a place is at least as worthwhile, and leaves you less exhausted at the end of the day.

I hope some of that helps, but do try to explain a bit more exactly what it is you're feeling, as that should allow people here to share experiences and tips on how to really deal with it, rather than taking some wild stabs in the dark like I've just done.

My name is Michael I'm 23 years old. I've wanted to go travelling for as long as I can remember. I organised a three month travel passing through Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam.
I've been in Kathmandu for three days now and am moving on to Chitwan tomorrow morning.
I'm starting to freak out about travelling alone for so long and can't get over it especially in the evening where I seem to freak out more.
Is this normal? And if so is there anything that will make me feel any better?
I'm starting to get disappointed with myself as I thought I would be able to travel without feeling this way. I've travelled before but this is the first time I'm on my own. Please let me know if there is a way to get rid of this feeling because I'm really starting to FREAK OUT!!

You ask 2 questions.

1. Is this normal?

Is it normal to feel the way you do? Hard to say since we do not know if you feel that way at home if you are on your own.

But - if you read other posts on these forums. you will see lots of people who are nervous too.

2. And if so is there anything that will make me feel any better?

Ask yourself, are you really alone? Look around you. Are there no people at all? No one to ask the same questions you have asked on your post?
Of course there are. It's up to you to make the first move & remember, they are as nervous as you.

And - if this is making you ill, get the first plane home. Perhaps you were a bit too ambitious with a 3 month trip at this stage in your life. Next time try somewhere less 'strange'. Somewhere that speaks your language & you can read the writing all around you perhaps.

I imagine you have a bit of culture shock & culture shock is real - don't make yourself ill over it.

Thank you for all the comments, I'm feeling better today and think I was having a low moment and I agree with all of you in regards to finding a routine and not rushing before I do things

it is normal to feel that way, and i think thats alright to feel alittle bit nervous.
but trust me, whenever you think that you're alone, its gonna be another traveler that you will meet, at the bar or in the hostel.
one tips for you, try to read alots of articel about "scamming" and how to avoid that. (i learn it in a hard way ). because mostly a solo traveler is a victim of lots of scam, anyway, where will you travels in indonesia? i have planing to travel in indonesia and malaysia too.
