Best place to rent housing?

What are the safest and most affordable places to rent a place for working holiday in Melbourne? I know being away from the suburbs will be best, but I'm just not familiar with the suburbs at all.... If anyone wants to suggest some other places in Sydney, Cairns, and New Castle that'd be awesome! I want to be somewhere that is going to be safe from muggers obviously, but it can't be super expensive. Thoughts?

What gave you the notion that Melbourne has a big problem with muggers?

Cheers,
Terry

I can't think of a single neighbourhood in Melbourne I'd classify as "unsafe" in any way, and I've walked my way through a fair few of them over the months I spent there. Australian cities are not at all like big cities in the USA.

That said, my favorite neighbourhoods for living in would be those just north of the CBD. Carlton, Fitzroy, Brunswick, Northcote or North Melbourne. Try to find someplace close to a tram stop or train station so you can swiftly make your way into the CBD.

The further you are from the CBD the cheaper it will be. There are definitely degrees of safety in the different suburbs. Always take precautions walking at night, no matter where you are. You realistically shouldn't have any trouble during the day anywhere in Melbourne though.

So really, the question is how far away from the center are you prepared to go Are you prepared to live in the Yarra Valley for example? The problem with going really far out is that the choice is more limited.

I thought Melbourne safe when I saw there but I stayed at a guest house in Siem Reap last year, owned by a man from Melbourne, and he said it was a high crime area.
