Hey everyone!
I am going to be coming to Australia in Jan. of 2016, most likely be along the eastern coast...going from places such a Melborne, Cairns, Sydney, etc.
I am planning on working for most of the time, just part time, because I obviously won't be able to sustain a lifestyle on $5000 alone for a whole year.
I want to stay in places for probably at least a week to a month, maybe more to a couple months, just depends on how much I like the city.
I looked at some hostels, and it seems rather expensive for just a weeks stay to pay $250-300 ....anyone have any advice for some cheap but decent hostels, people who are willing to share flats, etc??

That is an amazing understatement. You'll be astounded how fast you can blow through $5K in Australia.

LOL it's amazing that you quoted this and still mis-read that. I'm agreeing with you- 5k goes fast....it says I WON'T be able to live off of $5000........?? so was there some advice in this reply ?!
I didn't misread anything. You quoted the $5K as if it was meaningful on some level for a long term stay, which it's definitely not - especially when you only want to work part time.
Calm down and maybe someone will take the time to help you, or you could just use the search function.

Regarding the cost of accommodation, yes, it is that expensive.
Generally a suggested budget of $80/day will get you a bed in a cheap hostel, transport, basic activities, and food to cook yourself. You could look at Flatmates.com.au or the shared section of realestate.com.au but altogether it's not going to be drastically cheaper so I would definitely suggest thinking about full time work – especially if you plan on doing a lot of activities/tours or going out.
