There are quite a few old posts asking about "who is in Thailand" for particular dates - there are always tourists visiting Thailand for every month of the year. With maybe double beginning a month before and a month after the Christmas - New Years holiday period.
You will meet tourists on tours, in hotels, in pubs and beer bars and sometimes just walking down the street. You can have a good time even if you do most things on your own. TravBuddy has a section for meetups too.
When you need hotel help also say what your price range is and where. Use Thai baht. Sometimes the cost of a cheap hotel or guest house is not much different than a hostel. When you do a search on this forum you will find posts for some hotels too.
I like hotels in Bangkok where you can use the Skytrain, subway and Airport Rail Link.
Suk 11 Hostel is in a good location for nightlife, shopping, eating, etc. Also the Skytrain station is nearby. It is possible if times are right you can go from airport to hostel by rail. (And just a little walking.)
Some tourists like to use the train to get up to the Chiang Mai area. Some like to use the train to get to southern locations. (The train does not go to Phuket but you can go partway and use a bus the rest of the way.) Koh Phangan is popular with young visitors but you may find yourself around teenagers a lot. If you didn't go there before look it up on the internet. You can do a forum search for help with "how to get from one place to another" type questions.
When you book a bus my advice is to get a bus from a regular bus station vs a travel agency. When trouble with buses come up usually it is one booked in Khao San Road area. Do a Google search for scams to avoid. (Tuk-tuks, gem scams, palace scam, bad buses often come up.) Never pay a set rate for a meter taxi in Bangkok, using the meter will be cheaper.
Bangkok can be cheaper than many beach locations because of reliable cheap transportation.
