Car to Car Communication Devices

My wife and I will be travelling from Sydney to Paris in September this year with another couple. We plan to drive to the south of France, into Northern Italy, up through Switzerland and Germany then back to Paris. The trip will take 5 weeks and we have leased two Peugeot 308 sedans for the journey and we'll be following each other around.
However, one problem we haven't found a solution to is the matter of verbal communication between cars while on the road. We don't want to have to stop and talk. We want to be able to communicate freely and at will as we drive along.

Personally I would hire a minivan and travel together. No communication issue and you'd save a pile of money.

Good luck no matter what you decide.

Cheers,
Terry

That was my initial suggestion, but the other couple want some 'personal space', and I can see that it was a good idea to have the freedom and flexibility of two cars rather than spend every day, for 35 days in each others' company trapped in the same car. Not to mention the possible resentment and arguments that may ensue at being unable to stop at place that interests you.

So the problem still stands... what is the most practical and cost effective communication device to use?

You should buy local SIM cards for the countries you're travelling in. Don't go with the roaming option from Optus - that's just a rip-off and seeing as it's just for communicating between the two cars, it really doesn't matter if you get a new number for a few weeks.

A friend of mine runs . He can sell you the SIMs before you head off on your trip so you have them all ready to go.

Full Disclosure: Travellerspoint will get a commission for any purchase you make through that link. I'd recommend it either way though - to the best of my knowledge, it's the most cost effective option available.

Have a nice trip
