Your best bet is to rent a car and drive it. Route 66 is not as traveled as it was many years ago because the interstate highway system has attracted most drivers because traveling time is greatly reduced. The sad part is that Route 66 has a lot of history which is now missed. Taking this route gives you the opportunity to visit small towns that the highway goes through. You can stay at inexpensive motels along the route to save money. Try eating at some of the local restaurants. This can give you the opportunity to experience some of their local places and meet local people. Figure the cost of the motels and restaurants as well as car rental cost for the length of time that you plan on making this trip. Add a little extra for safety. Try googling these places to get a better idea of their cost.
I had made this trip a long time ago and it was worth it. It was a very adventurous time for me. I still talk about it today. If you have the time, I would recommend it.
