Hey there.
First, check the Canadian government's Web site on entry requirements: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index.asp
You may not need a return ticket to your country. But you may need to show that you have arranged transportation out of Canada, such as by flight or by bus to the U.S. or elsewhere. Or, that you can demonstrate that you have the means of traveling in and out of Canada, such as cash, credit cards, etc.
Sometimes all that is needed is printed confirmation of a travel booking. That can be easily arranged, particularly for U.S. residents who have the ability to change and cancel flight bookings within 24 hours of purchase without penalty, according to U.S. Transportation Department rules.
Purchasing a full-fare roundtrip airline ticket to your home that's changeable and cancellable is likely to be expensive.
When crossing borders, I always put my best foot forward. That is, I smile, am courteous ("Hello, good morning") and dress well. I respond to questions promptly; and give only the information requested. I don't go into detail, unless asked to do so. If I were in your shoes I would not tell the immigration officer that "I don't know when I plan to leave Canada, I don't know where I'm going next ...." Be prepared; know what's required, be self-confident.
