In summer I will be traveling round S E Asia - Vietnam in particular.
Honestly, why in the world do you need to travel with two telephones? What advantage does a second "emergency" cell phone have? If someone steals your iPhone are you planning on whipping out your second phone and calling the police as the thief sprints away?
I don't get it... please explain...

Why not? Well because carting unnecessary stuff round the world is a way to be miserable.
My smartphone died while travelling. What felt like a major pain turned out to be easy to deal with. I walked into a supermarket, bought an android phone for £30, popped my sim and micro-sd cards in and was back up and running with no fuss.
As is often said, everything you need is available on the road. There is no need to travel with tons of stuff "just in case".
I always get a local SIM card to cut the cost of phone calls.
And iPhones have very short battery life. Not ideal for when you are traveling.
I used to use an old Nokia - but its annoying to have to take a different charger.
If iphones are not ideal when travelling, why take an iPhone travelling? !
Just because it pisses me off to see some people intervening just to give their biased unhelpful opinion which is of not much interest for the world...
I also always have 2 phones when I travel because I unfortunately live in a country whose phone/Internet service providers don't promote 2-SIM-card phones on top, of course, of being the most expensive mobile and Internet providers in the World.
So, one is my regular Canadian provider phone, which of course I have with me as it is my regular phone with my contacts, music, photos, apps, etc. etc. that I would still be using on departure and arrival and in some countries where local SIM card option is not available in which case I would take a traveling option from my Canadian provider (still cheaper than roaming).
The second one, in my case, unlike the initial poster here, is another iPhone bought unlocked for local SIMs to keep having a normal life and be connected as I work when I travel and need to be during my usually long trips.
Now, that answers the why of our not unhelpful friends here.
I was in Vietnam but only 2 weeks in the first part of a long Asian trip and therefore I decided against trying to get a local SIM that time; so, sorry I won't be able to help on which phone to get.
If the question is on battery life, the easiest is to Google the phone reviews.
Same for which local providers to use usually.
I've got IT Canadian-Vietnamese friends, I'll try and ask what option they use.
I remember them saying that their problem the last time they were there was that they needed 4G connexion to keep in touch with work/client and that double SIM card phones did not propose 2 4G slots, since the point is it seems to give access to 2 different networks.
My solution for the problem of battery life (necessary as I take the train a lot when I travel and don't want to have to rely on the most of the time much coveted few power sockets in trains) is now a portable charger. This solves lots of problems.
Yes, that's another thing to carry, but see there are difference ways to travel in the World and we are not all new-age back to nature leasurely backpackers.
I personally travel 4 to sometimes 10 months a year so I need to keep working and having a normal life, which involves phone/internet connections to use as modem with my laptop to receive and send my work

It's the long battery life that has always made the basic Nokias phones so useful for travel. And you can get them with 2 SIM slots for added flexibility. However I also take a portable charger - they aren't very big.
It's the Nokia chargers that are so annoying.
I'm thinking of getting a Samsung E1270 but wondered whether there were any good alternatives.
