If your work and accommodation don't give you enough people to play with, I suggest Meetup - free website and app showing you lots of nearby social groups, mostly free and general social groups but also special interest ones.
Hi Sabrinaroy
Best place to live is probably around South West London, mainly Clapham. There is a HUGE NZ / Aus community and it is also a great place to meet people.
I am originally from London so if you need any help just give me a shout

There are tons of places to stay in London. Hangar Lane, Ealing and other areas close to London central are all hotspots for Kiwis, Saffas and Ozzies. Do yourself a favour and head to the Redback Tavern in Acton Town - plenty antipodeans hanging there for a party.
Andyf is right, Meetup might help you get in contact with people that have similar interests and could help you around. Couchsurfing does local meetings too, or you could always go out and have a drink with travelers passing through.
You can use http://www.gumtree.com/ and http://www.spareroom.co.uk/ to get a general idea of your accommodation options.
Have fun!!
