Am not sure what the best way is to find a job in Australia. I think you have to do this with help of the internet.
A friend of my did this. His employer arrange a place to sleep for him. I was told that alot of employers do that because of the large number of international employees. That might be an option for you?
Hey I'm going to Australia In February, starting in Sydney, I've booked a week in a hostel to start off with, once I'm working I'll probably look into a flat share or something, as for the jobs I'm gonna have a look online about a week before I go but will probably get the most luck when I'm in Australia, handing out cv's etc, I'll think most people sort out jobs once they get there. Although it might be a bit different if u have a trade

I've booked to stay at wake up and I used booking.com, but you use hostel bookers or hostel world, they are apps for those ones as well, and I'm taking about £5000
FYI: The combines hostels from a number of different hostel booking sites (including the aforementioned hostelworld), so gives even more options. Should be the same price for you (I think, barring exceptions), but helps support this site.
It generally pays to get a membership card for one of the big hostel chains (YHA or VIP), depending on which type of hostel you prefer (top end on both are huge and impeccable, but for smaller hostels YHA tends to have a slightly older and more diverse crowd (also families), while VIP tends to be more party-oriented). Such a membership card will give you a discount on each night's stay, and pay itself back in ~10 (YHA) to 20 (VIP) nights. Both also offer a ton of discounts on other backpacker activities, transport, etc, but those discounts are indistinguishable: one car rental company or outdoor store versus the other. YHA hostels also offer to book your stay at other YHA hostels for you, which I've frequently found useful.
Hard to say anything specific about finding work, as it depends hugely on the type of work you're looking for, your skillset, and your personality (some people just go door to door in stores handing out their CV, and score a job in hours, others spend months unsuccessfully applying). Seek.com.au is the big job search site, but it tends to not be so good for backpackers; lots and lots of recruiters which filter out travellers. You tend to have a better chance applying directly at smaller companies, particularly as there's lots of Australians who've been on a gap year of their own, and are willing to give the benefit of the doubt to someone they can empathize with because of that experience. For fruit picking, check out the harvest guide on the . That lists which regions of the country have peak season at which times; arrive in that region a bit before the peak, when demand is highest, and you should be able to pick up a job very easily. Having your own transport for this is good. (Be careful with dodgy operators offering all-in packages with transport, accommodation and food, and charging you far above what that's worth, but where you're stuck with them. (Luckily not a common occurrence, but still something to keep in the back of your mind.))

Apparently there's another website for jobs called jobs4travellers and as you'd guess it's geared towards backpackers, I've checked it out and there appears to be quite a few jobs on there. Another thing I've seen is that there's alot of jobs on Gumtree (if you can wade through the spammy ones) and you can also advertise yourself, saying what you want and how long you'll be staying, I thought I might do that for when I want to get my regional work on a station
