Hey I'm pretty sure you have to stay on the visa you enter with. e.g you cant énter Oz on a tourist visa then swap to a work visa. Also I think you can only stay for 3 months on a tourist visa not 6 months. Definitely pay to double check that info though as I'm from New Zealand so havn't needed a visa to travel to oz, just what i've heard from others. Hope that doesn't stuff your plans to much.
Yeah a tourist Visa will only allow you to stay for up to 90 days... if you want to renew this visa and/or swap to a Working Holiday visa, you'll need to leave the country to do so...
