Chiang Mai guesthouse?

I'm going to Chiang Mai with my boyfriend April2nd and we need a place to stay for one night before doing a two-day eco tour. Any advice? Our budget is midrange and preferably would like AC but fan is okay. Also we are arriving at 11pm so the place needs to be open late! Thanks

I stayed in the , which I can highly recommend. At 700 baht, it's solidly mid-range (you could undoubtedly find places quite a bit cheaper while still retaining AC), but also really quite nice. It's located is in the northeastern part of the inner city; a friend of mine who was a local at the time said he hadn't known that there were guesthouses in the soi over there; it's not the most touristy part of the inner city, but there's a couple of nice places to eat right around it, and obviously within walking distance of everything.
I'm not certain what their policy is on arriving late; if you think the place looks nice, I'd recommend emailing to ask them. They were prompt with replying to me when I stayed there.

I always want to try different places when I go somewhere, but sometimes I arrive at one place and I just never want to leave. Thats how it was with Stella the owner is such a hoot, and she is an amazing cook. She is very savy with the internet, if you email her she will arrange that you can get in that late. Her husband is from Singapore and they have both traveled to Europe, so they love meeting travelers, more than just running a business. They have rooms with very nice shared bath from 500bht

chiang mai is dirt cheap...i met a german lad on the train from bangkok,we decided to hook up and share a room...so we arrived in chiang mai early, about 8m,got a taxi into the main center of town and within 5 mins had found a nice little guest house costing us 240 baht a night, split beetween 2 of us that 120 each a night,i cant remember the name f the place now but it was one that specialised in organising treks etc etc and theres quite a few of them about...didnt have aircon but had 2 huge great fans and a good bathroom, hot water included...unfortunately i caught dengue fever and spent the next week or so in hospital but yup you cant go far wrong in chiang mai, best bet id say just turn up,get dropped off in the center and you will find somewhere close by..

good luck!!

Julie's guesthouse is nice, but very popular. Also down the road there is banana GH which is dirt cheap, me and my bf had a room for 80 bhat a night. its very basic though.
easy to find a decent double room for 200bhat. not so sure on mid-range.

Google these two and read reviews:
Sakulchai Court,
Tha Phae Garden GH,

I also stayed at Tri-gong residence - very easy to find and I would return. It's downtown in a convenient location with a very friendly owner. They quoted one price and then actually lowered the price on checkout because I was a single. You can't go wrong at Tri-gong residence!

Be sure to try the blind foot massage across the street - very nice. I suggest eating at for cheap and very good Thai food (try the special Green Chicken Curry)

Heh, they did that for me, too! Didn't know why, though - I thought it might've been because it was low season or something.
