To work you need a work permit and visa.
The visa is a nonimmigrant "B" and the work permit is usually job and location tied.
As you have noticed, the most obvious way to "work" in Thailand is to teach or run a bar.
they say the way to make a small fortune in Thailand is to come here with a big one.
however - business is business just as anywhere else in this world and if you can find a business to your liking - a niche - go ahead.
this is of course not that easy.
One paramount thing to bear in mind here is that the minimum wage in Thailand - set locally - is around 150 to 200 baht per 8 hour day.
so if you can compete with these wages you will be OK - but as a foreigner this is unlikely.
As you already have spotted the chances of an "ordinary" are virtually nil - Thai law sees to that - only certain jobs are open to foreigners - check the govt site (Dept Labor)
If you have professional qualifications i for industry, medicine etc you may be able to find work with one of the multi-national or international companies here - there are many engineers here on very good international salaries. You don't see many of them because they tend not to frequent the touristy areas or post on web sites.
If you want to be sneaky - it is virtually impossible to detect someone who is earning money by working on the net - so if you know a few internet jobs that might be your simplest answer.
at the end of the day I started by teaching which paid for my stay but I soon was able to see how I could develop my prospects - and I now earn more here than I could at home in a comparable job.
It does seem to me that most people who come here do not have an eye for a possible earner and hope to get a salary - that is unlikely outside teaching - you need to start and develop.

thankyou everyone for your advice and information...im kind of thinking unless i have £100,000 plus theres not really alot of hope as im not really qualified in anything specialist.,im a bloody lorry driver!!!the teaching english is probably the best option however it appears that you have to have a degree or have been to university and done further education,again something of which i havnt done.
i did think of maybe setting up a website and doing something over the internet,abit risky but could be done i think,again i think i would need to have quite abit of capital in the first place,maybe just a few thousand but would certainly make enough to live off i wreckon...this is something i need to look into abit more..
after doing all this research it appears things arent as straight forward and somewhat corrupt in thailand for us farrangs to reside there,however in time i will most definately over come these problems and reside there,whether it be in 12 months,5 years or 10 years...
If it's any consolation, the infatuation is often short lived, once you move here. It soon becomes another mundane life, plus you have to deal with corrupt bureaucracy.

yeh this im becoming more and more aware of as i look into things a little more...however id rather a normal,mundane boring life in thailand than in the uk...this place just seems to get worse...i have to emigrate soon!!!lol...
lets be honest there still has to be more plus points to living in thailand than in the uk...may i ask what it is you do and how you have ended up living in thailand...??

OK – i'm not letting this mis-information go unchallenged
Firstly , I was using the minimum wage to show how even if you run your OWN business the money you'll expect to take out of it in salary will be sizeably more than the local business people take thus making you less competitive. I also pointed out that there are only certain jobs that foreigners can do. (check with dept of labour)
(BTW – some people merely buy or invest in a bar and do not engage in “work” at all....they can keep any profit from the business subject to tax.)
As for the minimum salary it is NOT universally 50k - the figure varies and is for people receiving salary in Thailand and varies according to the country you come from – you can check this with dept labour.
(There are also deals with neighbouring countries to cover cheap labour) -
Furthermore this does NOT apply to jobs such as teaching – so don't expect to get anywhere near that at first.
OP - if you have property in UL you might consider how much rent/income you'd receive if you let it and moved here.
BTW - the UK economy has just shown good figures this month so your pound might get a bit of a fillip.
