China 28 Day Itinerary - Thoughts on Time Frame

Hi just wanted to get any thought people might have regarding the following itinerary - time would be the most important issue.

I think it looks pretty good.

I might be a little biased, but I don't think you have enough time in Shanghai, compared to 7 days in BJ - I'd consider adding 2 days to your time in SH, and take it away from BJ. It will be a lovely time to visit the Great Wall though, as still cold and so fewer tourists!

Xian you definitely don't need any longer - visit the Warriors, there's another tomb in the other direction, sorry, I've forgotten its exact name of right now, but well worth going to, wander round the Muslim Qtr and climb city walls - yep, fine time.

From Chengdu - I think it is well worth going out to the Leshan Buddha, as a day trip, but again timing is fine, and don't forget to visit the Pandas.

Hope that's useful!

Yeah thats a lot of help cheers!

I have read a few places that Shanghai doenst need more that a few days but might do as you have suggested and split the time between Beijing and Shanghai 5 days a peice.

Oh and gotta see the Panda's and just looked at the Buddah day trip - looks great.

Cheers again for the advice.

I think 3 days in Shanghai itself is enough, but 5-6 days in the area would be good as you could go to Hangzhou for a day or 2 and to one of the canal towns, such as Zhujiajiao, for the day. We stayed overnight in Hangzhou and hired a bike which was great. There's a big lake there which is lovely to cycle or walk around.

overnight train might not run between all the cities you listed, only between in the big cities with long distance (gulin to yangshuo; shanghai to huangshan are definately not),
if you'd like to choose train as your transpotation, then you have to book the ticket in the railway ticket or by agaency as soon as arrive a new place. of course, you have to bear the queue and the dirty & noise in the train in China.

I think you should take more time in west china

Huangshan is a MUST GO! It's breathtaking...
you may want to stay in Huangshan Old Street Youth Hostel. Clean, cheap & cozy. There is a restaurant selling variety of Chinese food right opposite this youth hostel. Don't miss it!

Happy travels!

Beijing 4 or five days is enough, i was there for 6 days and the last two were slow and lazy, unnecessary, Jingshangling section of the great wall is amazing, and i stayed at "sitting on the city walls" guesthouse, which i would also highly recommend. I agree with richardox and I think on your trip you should go to Yunnan province, Im planning another trip to china soon for a month this time and after researching, Yunnan is at the top of my list. If you are in Yangshua, you should go to dragons backbone rice terrace, but for my trip i might skip those two places for more time in Yunnan, it looks fabulous (kunming, lijiang, dali, tiger leaping gorge, shangri-la) and Kunming is easily accessible by train from Chengdu. If you stick to your itinerary and go from Chengdu to Guilin you should fly, as that's a really far distance. You could train to kunming and then train to guilin. You can find out all the train info you need here... http://www.seat61.com/China.htm

Cheers

As the posters above said, 7 days in Beijing, especially in the winter, is too long. BJ is freezing, many of the attractions are outdoors, and you'll want to get to warm southern China as soon as you can!

Hangzhou and Suzhou, near Shanghai, are worth seeing (plan 1 day each). Winter is also a good time to visit Hong Kong, as it's not too hot then.

Thanks all the advice has been very helpful - am looking at spending some time in Yunnan but might be a little bit of a stretch. I may have to go back another time.

Thanks for the link for the train tickets - its very helpful. Since it is Chinese New Year Holiday I am hoping the Train Tickets are not too hard to come by.

Cheers for the advice guys.
