Sri Lanka accommodation in December

I'm spending 12 days in Sri Lanka from the 11th - 23rd December. Is it necessary to book accommodation well in advance? I've read reports that Sri Lanka has been very busy in 2011 and that much of the accommodation is already booked until well into next year, but I'm not sure how accurate this is. I'm aware that it's peak season and that tourism there is on the increase, but I wasn't really expecting it to be particularly busy! Ideally I don't want to book everything ahead as I'd like our itinerary to be as flexible as possible.

Colombo you shouldn't have a problem, but the best beach locations will book out early. Some are already booked up, this is by locals more than tourists. I arrive on the 12th!

Thanks Dodger. What's your plan while you're there?

Currently dating a girl from Sri Lanka, so going to stay with her parents in Colombo, We only have two weeks there and since its over Christmas, will be spending much of the time with family, so just a couple of trips to places of interest. I want to go to Kandy and then down to the historic town of Galle and lastly on to the beach at Unawatuna. She has family in Kandy, but still have to sort out something for Unawatuna.
