I personally wouldn't stay in Khao San Road but I am not a kid any more. There are other areas of Bangkok that also have cheap places to stay at and also be able to use the Skytrain service. If you arrive before midnight you can even use rail service to get from the airport to hotels in Bangkok but not in the KSR area.
When you ask for hotel recommendations or suggestions also include the price range you want to be at per night. Use baht figure.

Well, if you are super fussy maybe no hotel will do for you. Millions and millions of young backpacker/tourist types stay in cheap places all the time. I don't see a lot of complaints on the travel forums. Even if you were not happy about the place you get it is only 3 nights and not a 30 year mortgage. Just never stay there again if you are not happy.

These 2 hostels are in the Sukhumvit Road area, you can walk to these places from the Nana Skytrain stop. Walk to restaurants, malls, nightlife, street vendors, travel agencies for tours, etc.

Once you leave Bangkok there are not so many hostels in Thailand. But small hotels and guest houses are also about the same price as what hostels charge. In a small hotel you usually have your own toilet and shower and not have to share with 30 other people.
WIthout a doubt Napark Hostel, jsut off Kohsan. Its very clean...you will meet friends within the first 5 minutes and its dirt cheap. The perfect place to pick up recruits for the travels.

To meet fellow travellers, Khao San Road is the place.... I would suggest you to stay at Green House on Soi Rambuttri, next to Khao San Road....
