Advice on 10 days in Vietnam and Cambodia

I am arriving in Ho Chi Minh city on Dec 28 and staying there until Jan 9. I would like to see Halong Bay, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh, and Hanoi, as well as go to Cambodia and Angkor Wat. Any advice as to where to go first? Fly in and out of Ho Chi Minh city. Also, any advice as to where to go for New Years Eve 2012?

You are obviously are going to fly most of this itinerary. I suggest you spend 28-29 in SGN. Take the overnight bus up to Nha Trang on 29th. This gives you all day in SGN and arrive in NT early am. Spend 30-31 in NT. Fly up to HAN on Jan. 1. Tour HAN 1-4 going over to HaLong Bay for day tour. Fly on Jan. 5. Tour Angkor 6-7. Fly VN Air back to SGN on 8th.

That is one option. Other members might have a better plan.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for this, it helps a lot. Do you think there will be anything going on for New Years in Nha Trang? Also, anything you think I just cant miss seeing?

Hey Sully ,
I think you should spend 28th.Dec in Sai Gon and take fly to Ha Noi on the next morning .Spend 1 night in Ha Noi and then the next morning 30.Dec you take 2 days tour in Ha Long bay.Come back Ha Noi in the afternoon 31.Dec and you will welcome New Year Eve 2012 in Hoan Kiem Lake. There have lots of thing to see and join with lost of tourist in that area. And the next morning 01.Jan fly to Nha Trang , spend couple days in Nha Trang. Then take fly or bus to Sai Gon.Following Mekong tours 3 days or 2 days to Cambodia. They will drop you at PhnomPenh and you get a local bus or fly from PhnomPenh to SiemRiep to see Angkor Wat.

P/S: This time is high season, so you should have a plan for your travel.

Not sure what is going on in Nha Tang over NY. I suspect HaNoi would be more exciting. One option that makes sense IMO is to drop NT. covers my last time there, but it is the one place you could drop out of your planned itinerary. After a few days in SGN, fly to HAN. Spend New Year's Eve there. This will give you a few extra days in HAN and HaLong Bay. Read a about HB before deciding on a 1 or 2 day tour. In Jan. you will not be getting in the water, so 1 day will probably be enough IMO. This will give time to visit some one the sights in and around HaNoi. DO NOT book any tours before you get to HAN. Competition is fierce for tourist dollars, so bargain for every tour and get 3 quotes before spending any money. Perhaps one of the might be worth your time.

Then fly to Siem Reap, in Angkor, fly VN Air back to SGN. Hope this helps. Mike

Next to impossible to see all that in 10 days - add at least 12 days, and it might be possible if you get up at 5am.

It's way too much to try and see in 10 days. Hanoi deserves a few days and Halong Bay another couple. As you are flying in and out of HCMC, I think you should forget about the North and do that another time. I'd spend a few days in and around HCMC and in Nha Trang, and the remaining few in Cambodia. As Daawgon says, you'd need at least 3 weeks to see all of the places you mentioned properly. I spent 3.5 weeks doing that route and still felt like I was a little rushed.

I would suggest Singapore or Thailand. Since you're in Asia, it's best to travel around the nearby places.

Good question. And some good answers. I am going from Vietnam-Thailand 21st Dec-3rd Jan. This info will come in really useful. Thanks guys,

Niamh
