Don't sweat the, "must arrange travel buddies for Thailand" scenario. Arranging travel buddies in advance for Thailand is completely unnecessary. Here's why:
Thailand is arguably the easiest/simplest "foreign" country on the entire Planet Earth for a solo western backpacker. Since you're following the usual Gringo Trail and hitting the usual Guide Book highlights you're going to find it absolutely JAM-PACKED with countless other backpackers EXACTLY like you. It's the perfect destination for a first time traveller who needs to build a little confidence.
Once you're in Bangkok it will be super easy to meet countless other travellers face-to-face and hook up with some compatible buddies - much better (in my opinion) than trying to pre-arrange stuff with strangers on the Internet.
Relax... have fun...

I agree with Terry - head to either the Soi Rambuttri area or Khao San Road to hook up with other travellers. Both areas are full of cheap places to eat, drink and sleep so you shouldn't have a problem meeting people.
Thanks guys ... I was just testing waters as it would be nice to know I have someone to meet! I know I'll bump into people for sure once I arrive ! Just all very daunting!!! X
